I have a 83 vmax and it wont shift the belt is worn about .125" narrower then a new belt. Could that be the reason the secondary clutch is not opening up all the way but when I put a new belt on it seems to be alright and also it seems to go through belts pretty quick the belt that is currently on it has about 15-20 hrs on it of hard acceleration. What is the average belt life? My primary is a comet 108c. Any help would be greatly appreciated belts are starting to get expensive. Thank you.
How do you know the sled is not shifting?
How high to the revs go when accelerating?
Does it go over 8500 RPM?
Have you marked the pulleys with a sharpie and see how far the belt moves out on the primary?
Have you removed the belt and moved the pulleys through their motion by hand?
Did you feel any rough spots or binding?
Did you remove the springs and inspect the bushings both visually and by feel?
Did you feel any rough spots or binding?
Are there any worn spots on the clutch faces or the weights?
Are the rollers rolling on the shafts freely?
Are the holes in the spider worn so the roller outer surface touches the spider?
Are you moving the belt adjustment washers from behind the secondary sheave to between the sheaves for a new belt and then move them back as the belt wears?
Are you using new belts?
What brand of belt are you using?
I get about a year out of a belt and then it explodes.
It typically does not get narrow, it just delaminates.
I just got three DAYCO MAX belts instead of CARLYLE MAX2 belts.
We will see if the original MAX belt works better than the new ones.
The more information you provide, the better our answer will fit your situation.
First of all thanks for the response This is what i've found without disassembling. I know its not shifting it wants to over rev at 40 mph(tach cable is broke so dont know exact rpms) it used to run wot at 85mph. Ran both clutches in and out by hand primary a little sticky so I lightly lubricated with a light oil, secondary smooth. Some things I found upon visual inspection of the primary clutch was alot of slop in the weights, along with flat spots about half way through radius and rollers were really sloppy causing them to want to bind up. Im going to order replacements for the rollers and weights. The secondary seemed fine except that there is about a .100" gap between the outer sheave and the flat washer, I can slide the secondary in and out on the shaft. Is that normal if not what could be the cause of this? The flat washer is about .060" thick.
Sloppy end play on the shafts is normal.
Flat spots on the weights are the problem.
If you have flat spots on the rollers, that is a different problem.
Both have to be fixed with new parts.
If the rollers bind, the flat spots will reappear quickly requiring new parts again.
Make sure the rollers do not bind.
My secondary has a couple millimeters of end play in it as well.
I don't know if it is designed that way or a previous user lost a washer.
