1983 V-Max 1984-87 Oil pump

Post by stv1991 »

I have two '83 V-Max's. I just bought two NOS '84-87 Oil pumps. My understanding is that the '83's were very rich and was cured buy the newer pumps. These should bolt right on is that correct? Anything else I will need to upgrade? What mainjets and pilots should I run with the newer oil pumps?

Thanks.......Robb

I'd have to look up the 83 oil pump issue your talking about. I remember reading something on it but I don't remember where or what sled it was. If the pumps you bought are the right ones you should be able to just bolt them on, bleed them out (properly), set the adjustment and go. You shouldn't have to re-jet for an oil pump change.

I just read that the '83's oil injection pumps were set on the rich side. 12:1 wide open setting and '84 on was 22:1 wide open setting. This was to ensure they had a reliable engine after the disasters of '81 & '82. My understanding was that the jetting was also on the fat side for the same reson. So I'm hoping I can just bolt on these NOS oil pumps to decrease smoking issues. What was the final main jet and pilot jet settings that the factory settled on in these motoros?

Thanks,

Robb

STV, See, the Articles section for specifications. The Red dot oil pumps are the upgraded and the Black dot are the older style !
