1981 Srx 440

Post by achamb »

Just Got my First 81 SRX a Few days ago. Ebay of course, found in lower MI. I've wanted one for awhile. My brother has a few 80's vmax 540, and I always like to be just alittle different then him. I've always been a Yamaha Guy, 1st sled ever owned 78 Exciter. most current 04 RX warrior (my wife got it New for my Annv. present!). My daughter has a 99 phazer 500.

I've read some about the 81, mine has the upgrade to the ignition(no Serial #'s). The bottom end got some water in it and were going to see if we can save it. I want to know is this engine going to be reliable enough to run around on? If not I may upgrade to 540. I plan to do a FULL resto and really want to keep it Original. But I want to be able to run it on a vintage ride next winter in the UP. without the fear of "major" melt down.

Thanks alot. Love seeing these "classic" sleds still running.

I read some where that....... "if you have a 81 SRX that has held the crank together longer than 500miles then you have a good one" with that said and in my opinion it's only a matter of having one properly jetted and clutched for the conditions to make them rideable ?

I have an 81 my self , if I were you I would try and save the 440 , as said if it is still running then you have one that is worth saving. They really aren't as bad as people make them out to be , you just have to keep them in tune. Save the 440 and enjoy it , there are a lot of 540's around but there is something special about that 81 440 .
