Aluminum axles on the 81 SRX and 84 Phazer ? ! ?

Post by Vmax540 »

Ok, you old timers......... :) did the 1981 SRX & 84 Phazer both have aluminum drive axles and did either have anything other than steel jackshafts ? If so, would they fit a Phazer II or Vmax540 ? Thanks

The 81 SRX 440 did have an aluminum drive axle but I think that the 84 Phazer had a steal one. It will interchange into the Vmax but you have to use the 81 SRX lower sprocket, bearing , drive sprockets and oil seal because the drive shaft has a larger diameter. The bearing is still available from Yamaha ,but the oil seal is not. I have found an oil seal in the NAPA book that is the same , the part # is NAPA 13423. Also the SRX used an 31 tooth sprocket and the Vmax an 33 tooth you can order a 33 tooth for the 81 and I think it is still available . The 81 shaft is lighter but I have heard that it had some trouble twisting under hard use ,but I don't know that for sure . All I know is that mine in my 81 was straight when I restored mine last year and it used to be drag raced. The jackshafts on both were steal.
