non tors vmax's

Post by srxvmax 50 »

Hey vmaxer's out there! Tell me: Didn't yamaha build the earlier vmax 540's without Throttle Overide Systems? I'm a thinkin I wanna get out from unneath the complications brought about by TORS and go back to a tether cord shut-down. Wouldn't sourcing a non TORS thumb throttle be better than having that wobbly-sloppy oem one on my '86? I'm not sure, so tell me gang. Tanks. MJD

1985 on up had the T.O.R.S. I believe the 83 & 84's had the same throttle assemblies but, would have to check. There are white nylon bushings that the pin goes thru to hold the lever that maybe worn on your sled ?

Hi, The early ones without TORS had a white plastic piece that slid down inside before you would install the pin and would take up the slop you are talking about. I don't think it was available seperatly from Yamaha but I may be wrong. If you had one of them you could use your original throttle block. The engine, electrical and throttle block in my 81 mod are all out of an 86 and that is what I did on it. It was the only way I could get enough throttle pull out of the stock throttle block to open up the 44mm carbs I'm using. With the stock 38's all you really need to do is disconect the TORS unless the movement of the switch bothers you. If you do that piece you may have to readjust your throttle cables as it may cause the slides to go up to far in the carbs which coud cause some binding and uneeded stress on the cables and thumb lever.
Good Luck, Phil (opsled)
