hey, im new to the forum.. i thought i would show you guys my new project.
I recently got a 1981 yamaha srx 440 from a buddy for free!! My dad had one when he was younger and said that they werent reliable... at all so i plan in the next year or two, to start stripping it and converting it to the 570cc exciter motor, with exciter driveline and hopefully vmax 540 pipes should be fun i will have some pics of it up soon, Check it out on 485yamaha 's channel on youtube
The81 srxs are reliable you just cant jump on and ride em like a 340 yamaha. If the crank is true and everything is in line they are good machines, the vmax pipes wont work i would stick with a 540 or 440 motor the 540 makes more horse then a 570 anyways.
I own a V Max not a SRX, but from everything I read here, I'll go along with Chris. I did have an Exciter and they were known for problems themselfs altho I think Yami sorted that out so maybe depends on year. Ours was a pouch and not very relieable.
The 81 is allready a classic, I doubt exciters ever will be. I 'd think about going over the 440, it will be much faster
Again, it would be more work for something that isnt as good. Check the crank and top end for specs and wear and justin that drag races his 82 srx told me just to use vmax weights and spring for a 102 clutch if it has the original i would put it on the shelf for show they are heavy and will twist that crank.
If a crank has lasted 30+ years and the bearings are good I'd say you are good too go ? B.T.W. I had a brand new 88 Exciter with PSI needles, PJ block off kit, updated jetting and the Yamaha updated (89?) Airbox and put on over 5000 trouble free miles before selling the sled.
Ihavent decided what im doin yet anyway... when i open that motor, the condition will make my decision... because i have 2 exciter motors that r blown sitting in the shed with complete drivelines. but who knows, i'd love to see that 440 running though
I saw your video there on youtube that is a nice sled alot of good stuff to work with clean it up and check the motor, is the motor siezed? I looks like it was real nice before being kept outside without a cover.
it actually inside the new porta shed now, and i have the orignal tarp plus, the motors not seized, its got great spark and a really strong magneto.
I thought i would look down the cylinders a few days ago and i saw no scoring on the side with no compression, and some scoring on the side with ok compression,
and im going to take pics right now ;p
