Yamaha improved the 87's ignition and many claimed (including my dealer) that this really improved the Performance all the way thru. I have never ran a 1987 (somewhat rare # 582 known) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=585

It ran really well on the 3 feet of snow we got i couldnt believe it I always just thought they were as the old man put it, "groomed trail, along the side of the road rockets" but it sat on the snow well with me on it and being 300lbs im not the typical rider...Again i was very surprised when i first took it along side the road doesnt take long to get to 90mph.
