oil cable replacement??

Post by Vmxhunter »

After getting off my fat butt. And decided to start working on the Vmax. I was looking into my oil cable adjustment. And noticed that the cable movement wasn't smooth. I noticed alot a fraying by the cable adjuster. So I think it's hanging up (inside the cable housing) a 1/4" (give or take a 1/8") open even when the throttle is closed. And some slack in the cable by the throttle lever. I tried to adjust it. To tighten it. But nothing worked.

How hard is it to replace the oil cable? There is nothing in the shop manual on this procedure. How is this done?

its pretty east to actually replace the cable but a PITA to get to it...

there are just 3 screws that hold the little cover on the oil pump. once you fight to get those off you see how the cable just wraps around iand hooks with a barrel end... then it is just a matter of routing the new on and adusting it like the manual says...
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

Tyler...I got the cover off easy enuph. That last screw I just used a small needle-nose vise grips on. Didn't mangle the screw head hardly at all. BUT, once I got that cover off. I seen alot of grease inside. I asume from the factory, to keep things moving inside. Should I put some grease in after I'm done replacing the cable? If so, what type of grease should be used?

Of-course the cable is still on order at my local Yamaha dealer. Normally you get the parts the next day. But, just my luck....The cable is coming from the California warehouse. So it could take a week, to 5 months it seems like to get the parts.

yeah i dont know if that is special grease or not... i dont see why it would be... if it still looks good a greasy i wouldnt worry about it, but if it looks like it could use a bit more i would just put something in there that is good for low temps
