83 v max no spark was running good and then nothing

Post by treeclmb1 »

was ridding my v max and it sputtered to a stop. I have just gone through the carbs and had it running perfect. I have had problems in the past with a lose conection on one of the wires going into the coil on top of the air box. so i fiddled with it and got spark again. 30 yard later nothing. so i am thinking that i should just redo the crimp conection and fix it right. so i did and still nothing. when i ohm out the conection i get 0 resistance from the conection to the coil on both wires going to the coil. so i am starting to wonder if it is farther on down the line. i am checking spark with an inline tester. i have also checked the on off switch and it is working corectly in the right posistions. is there a test i can do on the two wires going to the coil when i pull the starter? tried on DC an AC voltage and got nothing while pulling. any ideas why i went to no spark all of a sudden? thanks

Chuck and Tyler have specs listed in the Articles sec. I think they are for a '86, but my '83 was close. Test the wires coming from the stator. You have to start somewhere, short of having an extra coil or CDI box, I would start there. That's assuming your sure your dirty connection is now good.

Ist check that all connections are clean, dry and tight.

Ignition Coil Resistance Primary/ Secondary 0.12 Ohm 10%/ 4.0 Kohm +/-20%
Source Coil Color Code/ Resistance Brn~Red/ 245 Ohm +/-10%
White- Red~ Red/ 10 Ohm +/-10%

Pulsar Coil Color Code/ Resistance White- Green~ Black/ 100 Ohm +/-10%
Spark Plug Type/ Gap/ Torque NGK BR 9EV/ 0.7~0.8mm/ 2.75 m/Kg (19.9 ft/lbs)

That sounds familiar.

I found my source coil epoxy had cracked and the wire vibrated loose from the coil to the outside world. I resoldered the connection, coated it with JBweld and it has run flawlessly since then.

My lights went out on the last ride, I suspect the same issue. The ohm meter checks confirmed that the problem is in the stator. I just need time to disassemble it.

I wish I had known about it earlier when I was rebuilding the starter the week before the lights went out.
