swap meet vmax engine took home found something weird

Post by sledhead1940 »

ok I purchased a an 84 vmax at haydays for parts cause it was mostly stripped out,but everything was there under the hood the motor was stuck tight,so i purchased it took it home began to strip the motor down and when i pulled the head i found something weird.........actual paper gaskets instead of o rings someone along the way had actually took each jug and had the o ring grooves machined flat,so the paper gaskets could be used, the gaskets match the water holes closly and appered to have the stud holes widened in order to slid on,has any one evr herd of this or what gaskets could have been used??????

hmmm never heard of that... if the jugs were machined so that the oring "grooves" were gone then it would have a lot less squish area.... and really high compression i would think... is that some kind of race motor? maybe someone welded the grooves and then machined them off to the stock deck height? definitly interesting.... im not sure what to think... how bout some pics....
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

i will have to get some pics, the sled itself had 8,500 miles on and appered stock other than the jugs so i don't know if it could have been a race motor or not but my intial thought was maybe they were getting sick of blowing o rings so the figured out a solution, the gaskets they used are pretty thick, the hight of them may have been able to keep the compression close to stock, does not appear like they did any welding just milled the crap outta jugs and it must have worked and been reliable with 8,500 miles on it and from what i can tell the sled just locked up sitting
