oil leak

Post by Vmxhunter »

I have this small oil leak on my 86 vmax that's driving me up the wall!!! Just got home from my local Yamaha dealer. Talked to a guy that has been there since these sleds were new. He told me it might be the seal is bad where the tach cable goes into the housing. He has new seals at the dealer.

I'm wondering if anyone had changed these seals with the motor in the sled. And how much of a pain in the butt it is to do this job. The guy at the dealer said off the top of his head. It's a couple hour job.....so you can imagine the bill on this one. I would like to do it myself....But I can just imagine the stuff that has to be removed just to get at this seal!!!

ya, it's injection oil. I did the chain case all ready. New oil seals there. And fresh oil. And The oil that's leaking, you can tell is injection oil.

Who knows it could be a leaking oil line which definately would need attention.

When you get the little cover that the cable screws onto off(just two screws)where the seal is, also check the shaft that the cable goes into for wear, check for a little free play from side to side. Sometimes the shaft and/or the bushing will wear and that little seal can't keep the oil back. The shaft and bushing will come out but it comes out a little hard as it has a little interference fit. I have had to replace a few of them on these sleds.
