If your looking at the factory gauge, my answer would be if it moves, your in trouble

I tried 2 factory gagues, neither moved unless it was overheating, Finally put on a known good Autometer gague from a car, same story. The sensor is mounted in a small line that runs from the botom of the engine to the top I checked that nothing was pluged. My thought is from the way its routed, water really has no reason to go up that line, so it doesn't.

I just usually start mine up while I get suited up, let it idle for a few min. then don't hammer on it for thei first few minutes for too long.

The normal temp for the thermostat to open is from 103-106 degree F. If everything is OK then they will run right around that temp. The best factory gauge to use is the 84 up, the 83 gauge doesn't start to move until 140 degrees F. I have always ran a thermostat and have had zero problems with these sleds over heating.
