Pipe Question on '83 V Max

Post by sledheadron »

I recently picked up an '83 in pretty good shape that runs great, and it came with an '85 as a parts sled. My question is about the pipes on the '83. I looked up on a microfische, and the part #'s are the same from '83 and '85, I am wondering if they are off of an SRX??? The sled was supposedly raced years ago, I am wondering if they ran the SRX pipes to get more power at higher R's??? I appreciate any info, Thanks!!!

Ya ive heard that but the stock mufflers make the most horsepower with the best HP curve with a stock set up...Those
are SRX 440 pipes you have on there, i would just find a set of used pipes for it. You could try each set and see how you like each one but i wouldnt recommend it, you could blow the machine up.. Just set it up stock and clean up and service the clutches with the stock pipes and it will be a rocket ship.

Ok, Thanks. The sled was raced at one time and the guy supposedly really knew his stuff. He told the guy I got it from that these pipes work considerably better than the stock ones. I guess I will see!!! I plan on cleaning up the '83 and leaving it pretty stock, but might turn the '85 into a drag sled like it would have been done back then.

Mine came with SRX pipes on it, Switched to VM pipes, to be homest, I didn't see a big change, but didn't change the clutching which would be a must. Now mine is being turned in to a 600 cc ( see My Prodjects section VooDoo Max). Ports are very different so I will try to dyno it with both sets, then deside which to run

yeah those are definitly srx pipes... i am wondering what kind of effect they really do have on hp because dynotech did not test them in thier comparision ride it and see i guess, but be careful, watch those plugs... it might be made to only run 660 at a time "reliably"
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!
