Some questions about my 81 SRX...

Post by rlester »

Hi Guys,

Went on a nice three hour ride on Sunday. I was on the SRX, and my 11 year old son was on his 74 Lynx 292. No problems other than he got stuck once in the SRX and twice with the Lynx as we were taking turns. Was pretty easy to get them out luckily. We were mostly on bush trails, creeks and some ditches.

Anyways, I consumed 12.5 litres of fuel, and .5 litres of oil, so it looks like my oil is too rich. I adjusted the cable three turns leaner, is that too much? I have a little oil mixed in the fuel tank right now just in case its too lean.

The other thing I noticed was the gas guage (clear fuel line) showed almost empty, but when I filled it up, it only took 12 litres. Isn't this a 24 litre tank?

Somewhere on the internet a few weeks ago I found a page of specs for the 81 SRX, and do you think I could find it now? It sure would be nice to have if anyone knows where there are some specs.

Overall, I'm very happy with this sled (I got it for free) and have no complaints. I've been slowly fixing everything up. I even got a new trip odo knob from the local dealer, they actually had it in stock!

Ryan.

These sleds are great, my V Max is apart right now but I had my SRV out tonight, basically the same sled with out the liquid cooling.makes about the same HP as my VM. No problem keeping up with my kids friend on a A/C 600 tripple/tripple and what I like is when we stop around other sledders, everyone looks and asks about mine.AND its gotta be 150 pounds lighter then that A/C.
I got to stop riding with the kids, damn am I beat up

Bump,

and a new question. The oil in my gearbox looks milky, is there a leak and antifreeze is getting in there?

How much oil should be in there? There is no dipstick, just a white threaded plug.

Ok, 25cc, but how do I drain and refill it? There is no drainplug on the bottom. I have an oil suction machine, can I use this? Then, how do I know if its too full if I didn't get it all out?

Unfortunately, the 81 SRX 440 does not have a drain hole in the pan to get to the drain plug. I don't understand what engineers at Yamaha were thinking, aparently they were not thinking at all when they designed this machine. The shop manual indicates to remove the motor to get to the drain plug. Again, another great suggestion by Yamaha. Like anyone really wants to remove the motor to drain the oil. I would just drill a hole in the pan right under the drain plug. Remove the yellow oil cap and fill till you see oil, then put the yellow cap back on. Good Luck with your 81 SRX.
