In my opinion and expeirence, it comes down to setup, on the 81 440 with more hp and a real clutch set up with engagement at 6000rpm(because it doesn t make any power down low) and it will hand a vmax540 its pants in a dragrace, but what your comparing are 2 differnt things.
The 540 was made to trail ride and the 81 srx is a lake racer, thats why it didnt go over well with "joe public trail ride",its a peaky, high performance top end engine, the 540 has much tamer, bigger volume pipes, lower operating rpm and alot more tame porting, engine specs, the engine had to be bumped up a 100cc to get close to the 440 power output from the vmax engine package. Vmax is a great engine, its more tailored by design to trail riding, they can be very respectable perfomers even today. The 81srx 440 is more of a loose pin grenade on the edge...for max hp output.lol
the srx as delivered was not tuned into itsfull potential, the vmax was alot closer to realistic performance out of the box and thats why it doesnt bog as nearly much and is more userfriendly, 2 differnt fruits compared here, but they share the same skeleton basicly. Except for the driveshaft and seat, couple minor things.
Which is faster?? The srx 440 or the 540

yeah i was trying to figure out the weight differences. because the 440 does feel a lot lighter . it has an aluminum driveshaft.the seat is smaller and lighter.i think the suspension is lighter. 1 heat exchanger. pipes aresmaller its to bad couldnt adapt a lighter aluminum muffler the stock 1 weighs a lot.
