Stator Questions

Post by Don »

First, wanted to note this is a great site, thanks. At this time I have 4 vmaxs: 83, 84 and two 86's. I need to get around to fixing a head gasket on the 83 and rebuilding the top end on one of the 86's, then all of them will be trail ready!

I have a question around the stators, I have been doing some reading on the site, but looking for a definate yes or no.

My 84 had a bad lighting coil and hand warmer coil, the wires were broken. I had a spare stator plate laying around and put it in (it was quicker than resoldering wires). Runs fine and everything works, but after some reading and testing, my Red to Red/White Ohms out at 50. It is supposed to be at 10. So my spare stator plate must have been out of an 87. Do I need to pull it back out and get the right ignition coil in that has 10 Ohms since it has the 84 CDI?

Don, welcome to V.V. ! I wonder if your stator is a 1987 or just out of specification ? I am really not positive but, I would guess..... with that stator and the older CDI you would not get the benefit of the higher output voltage ? Why not just pick up a newer CDI ?

I'm not concerned about getting the benefit out of the higher 28000 volts from the CDI. It actually runs great the way it is currently setup. I just don't want to ruin the current CDI that I have by running the newer coil, if infact it is the new 87 coil. I was basing that off a reply posting from Jeff in one of the other Stator postings that in 87 the spec for the coil was 50 ohns.

So, I'm just wondering if the newer coil with 50 ohms of resistance could toast the CDI unit. Thanks in advance for any input I can get.

All I can say is that Yamaha changed both stator and CDI on the 87 ,and if yours ohm's out at 50 then you have the 87 stator . It may work just fine but it may not last as long because of the stator sending more voltage to the CDI. If I were you I would run it and try and find a older stator or newer CDI so the will match. Electronics are funny things.. I am sure if you ask, someone on this site should be able to sell you one..

Thanks Jeff. I spoke to the local dealer yesterday and he gave me the same advice. He called the factory tech department and they said to be safe keep the coil and CDI matched. Since neither of them cross back to substitute the early years (84-86).

It's all back together with the original 84 coil. Just had to solder the wire to the coil. Seems like the common failure point is where the stranded wires solder to the solid wire of the coils. Between all my machines, this is the 3rd one I've had to resolder no matter which coil it is(lighting, handwarmers, ignition).

Thanks Again
