Post by atcrider1 »

so im getting some mildly aggressive porting done to my 87 vmax, im also gonna jet it, do a few clutch mods and run pod filters on the carbs.

if i run a piece if straight pipe off each of the stock 87 pipes how will it run? has anyone else done this?

is there anything i can do to the stock can?

When a pipe is designed it is set up to have "X" amount of back pressure. It doesn't know if its from a stinger or from a muffler, it just needs "X" amount to keep the tuning of the pipe as it was intended. When building race pipes you can vary either the length of the stinger or its inside dia to get the back pressure your pipe wants.
A pipe on a 2 cy is not only the exhaust system it also serves the purpose of the valve train in a 4 cycle.. That makes it a pretty important part.
Their are basically 5 parts to a pipe that alter things in different ways or different parts of the RPM range. From what I have read here and on Dyno Tech the stock pipes are as good as it gets for a stock engine. IMO the stock box is not that heavy by todays standards, and not really in the way of anything. What are you looking for by changing it?
If, because of your changes in porting, your trying to optimize the pipe to work with that, I would say the changes need to be in the stages of the pipe and not just the stinger. In porting the engine, did you alter the port timing or just port it for more flow?
