Have you guys had problems with the speedo cable on the 86 540?Mine just died lastnight.i like to keep track of the miles i put on a year.1126 as of now!!let it snow!!thanks guys.

yeah i dont think it is reoccuring problem but i managed to break a cable once... i think a lot of these old yamaha's used the same set up... its really just a tight coil with a square drive on both ends... mine broke near the footrest where it makes the turn... i sprayed lithium lube in the new one and straightened the curve as much as possible, its been running fine since.....
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

I threw a belt once and it kinked the cable.
The inner part broke soon thereafter.
I replaced the entire assembly with one that did not have holes in the jacket from the belt strings whipping the plastic off.
I tucked it a little further down in the footwell to protect it better.
I have not had any problems since.
