?? the vmaxs had a 102 on them? now if your talking a 102 from another sled with a different tapered crank then i dont know.... also maybe you mean 108? but if, as the subject suggests, it is a 102 from a 81 srx then by all means yes! that is perferred, you will however have to "recalibrate" it aka you'll need the purple spring, A-3 weights, and whatever bushings may beneeded... expect to pay $100+ in parts to reconditioning anything that is well used.... i JUST finished rebuilding mine  :D
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

I wanna put a primary from a 440 on it. The clutch has a stamp that says 8M6
and i was gonna redo it and put it back on with the secondary from the same 81 440 srx
and redo it. My dad is a master with clutches but he only likes yamahas. I just bought a
86' yamaha v-max 540 Its been sitting for 6 years i cleaned out the carbs and it screams. We had first snow today and my dad took it for a ride and had to admit its faster then his EX 440 lol. He gave it a handfull and it almost peeled him off the back of it haha. I had it going about 80 mph today the clutch is hanging up at about 8 grand. Get this, it has a polaris clutch on it. But it has to be redone for sure.....I was wondering if the 8M6 clutch would be better??

You can put either a 102 or 108 on the 540.
I have used both and I can't tell any difference in performance.

Be careful to get the correct taper depth.
Yamaha taper depth is different than other brands.

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/produ ... 636&mmyId=

Shows nine models of 108.

380641 fits the SRV and VMAX540 are listed with a depth of -0.140 inch.
380636 is for 1980 Yamaha SRX 440 with a depth of -0.245 inch.
