Last year when I was driving my '83 V-Max, on the straight stretches it would wind up pretty quickly then over-rev. If I did that then let off the throttle then hit it again it would shift then pull hard again to top speed. What do I need to check or do to get this thing to shift out smoothly. I'm assuming this is in the secondary, is that right?

You are experiencing a sticky spot in either or both pulley sheaves.
Remove both primary and secondary springs. Feel the movement for sticky (or rough) places in the movement.
Look for worn spots on the primary weights or rough spots where the shoes ride the ramps in the secondary. Replace the secondary shoes if they are worn. They cost less than $2 each. I bought some last week so I know they are available from Yamaha.
Make sure the rollers on the spider roll freely. Stuck rollers give similar symptoms and will wear dips in the weights if they are frozen.

Good answer Joe ! Robb take a sharpe and make lines from the inside to the outer edge on both clutch surfaces. Make a WOT run then stop and see where the belt did and did not wear off the sharpie marks.

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but I don't have any place to do a WOT run to top speed right now.
This month, I have a relatively warm shop so I tend to disassemble and visually inspect things this month rather than take them out and test them. I expect to do some WOT tests starting in December to check my jetting. I will post that question in another thread.

WOT is Wide Open Throttle.
My field is too small to hold the throttle open for more than about 3 seconds.
It takes about 10 to 30 seconds of WOT to get an accurate plug color depending on how close the jetting is to optimal.
My three second tests show the jetting is within one jet size of correct. To make the final selection, I need to be at the correct altitude and run the engine longer to get a good plug reading.
