My Vmax has a thumb warmer in addition to the handlebar warmers.
Was this standard equipment, a factory option, or a dealer installed option?
Why would it be wired into the lighting coil instead of the handlebar warmer coil?
Thumb Heater
Either the dealer or previous owner added the thumb warmer. The output of the electrical system on the Vmax is just enough to heat the handwarmers so, adding a thumb warmer to the lighting coil is exactly what I have done. I would like to try a LED tailight bulb which uses 1/2 (?) or less of the wattage of a standard bulb to see what difference there may be ? Which could be especially, helpfull in the 83-84 models without the handwarmer coil.

One issue about the installation of the warmers, is that the lighting circuit is regulated and the warmer circuit is not regulated.
The warmers get hotter when the engine is running fast and don't put out as much at idle.
By putting the warmers on the regulated lighting circuit, they will stay warmer at idle and not run as hot when in motion.
