83 540 bottom end power problimes

Post by True »

I bought an 83 vmax and didn't know that the motor was ported and polished. I siesed the rings this year, so i put new pistons and rebuilt the carbs. Now I don't have the bottom end power and cant get the sled going under its own power but if i get it going it goes good at high rpms. I need to know how to fix it, or make it better.

What is your clutch engagement RPM? If your spring gets weak, the engine won't pull properly.

Did you change fuel? If you are not running the same fuel, the mixture can be out of tolerance. Be especially careful about stations selling E10 as gasoline. The jetting needs to be changed to accomodate the difference in fuel formulation. If the previous owner used avgas or racing fuel, you should try that before you spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to fix it.
