Chaincase gearing 17/33 or 18/33 whats your opinion???
Just wondering what people are running i have 18/33 right now and have acquired a 17/29 and the chain to match from a phazer as they are the same.I,m thinking of using the 17/33 In my understanding it should free up some resistance on the motor, lower the top speed by a few and make you hang on alot more. Just wondering what the other vmax's are running and if anyone has done this and how they like the change from 18 to 17. Any comments appreciated!

Jeff, I'm running a 17 top gear with the 33 bottom. Where I live there are very few places that are fit for top speed runs and besides I really get the biggest kick on holeshots and of comming into a turn at 30mph and the slingshot acceleration out at 50mph !

Tks Chuck i was beginning to wonder if anyone would let me in on there little secrets of tuning . I can hardly wait to try the combination, i have alot of options available to me now since i got the 17/29 set and matching chain. I could have 17/33 or 18/33 or 17/29 or 17/28 with the parts i have. Having done the math the 17/33 is 1.94 to 1 which is the most reduction out of all the gears. A chart i read said at 8000 rpm it should do 87.5 m.p.h. now i know the vmax has more than 8000 rpm so i,m sure this is an awesome combination for trail performace. I,ll let you know how it works for me.

Its in a book its the polaris gearing chart if i can find it online i,ll post it. My buddie has the polaris service manual for a whole bunch of models and makes I think it said stock 18/33 is around 91.4 M.P.H. at 8000 rpm I know the Vmax is above 8000 but 8000 is in near the top H.P. it can get. I actually was doing around 95 with 18/33 runnung with a polaris xlt special 2 years ago when my clutch was freshl. I,d say i was probably doing a solid 90 but his speedo said 95. The kicker is i have the wrong clutch on it its a Y.P.Z. off of god knows what lol.

liek chuck i also have 17/33 and my speedometer read 90 last thursday just before my lower rod bearing scattered... i wasnt looking at rpms but they probably were at 8200 or so... good news i should be starting my sled again tonight with about 1/2 hour of work, AND its snowing

too bad about your crank? They always run the best right before they blow lol no resistance then something piles up in the bottom end, very common in my experience. Usually its damage done from sitting every year or in some cases many years in a row. We just took apart a 488 f/c Polaris that had been run quite abit this year, it locked up in the bottom end . WHEN THE cases were split there was rust in it. a result of improper storage then the bearings rust. If we could run our sleds all year round they would get more mileage before a teardown. AND definitely fog the engine. ALSO KLOTZ 2 stroke oil or other higher quality oils will stick to everything in the engine when its not used. I took 1 apart that had Klotz in it and after sitting for 5 months or so everything was pinkish and sticky. You get what you pay for i guess that stuff isn,t cheap.

im not sure if the high speed run had much to do with the crank bearing but it may have... i went screaming down the dirt road in good conditions and daylight... so i had lots of room and could actually see where i was going for once... then after about a mile of midrange running... it simply shut off and had very, very, little copression on the pto side... needless to say it go trailered in..... should be all fixed now... im getting pretty good at this wrenching thing, but i wish i wasnt

I went to change what i thought was 18/33 gearing today and discovered whoeveer had the sled before me had put a 19 top gear with a 33 bottom. Stock is 18/33 . I nnow have 17/33 and holy crap what a difference in bottom end power, I,m so happy it never had that much power before. Only thing i realize now why i was doing over 95 mph 2 seasons ago it was all gearing . You never know what you got until you get right into it and do a little R&R. Tks guys for all your input. Jeff

Jeff, kinda makes it like ridding a motocross bike with the front end getting light with every punch of the throttle especially, if you have a more aggressive track than stock !
