Rebuilt motor doesn't sound right

Post by Donnie »

Hey everyone. Finally got all the pieces back together on the 1983 Vmax tonight. I turned the gas on and pulled it about 10 times without the spark plugs in to prime the carbs. I put the plugs back in and a few pulls later it was running, but just didn't sound the same as it used to.

Basically, it was running rough at idle and wanted to stall. Almost sounded like the timing was off, but I put the stator in the same place that it was when I removed it. I know this because I put a punch mark on the stator and one on the case.

My only thought is that the timing could be off since I switched to Wiseco Pistons. Are they a different height?

It also sounded louder. My cylinders are sleeved instead of original. Does that make a difference?

The sad thing is that it almost sounded like something was loose, but nothing external was. I certainly hope nothing came apart inside somehow.

Your thoughts are always welcome.

BTW, there hasn't been enough snow to get out in South Western PA even though there were people out there. I think that just tears up sleds trying to ride in four inches.

Donnie, I have stock sized Wiseco's in my 86 and they run great with stock timming. "My cylinders are sleeved instead of original" = I hope you got the rings designed for sleeved (iron cast) sleeves ? I would use a dial indicator and recheck your timming for .063 B.T.D.C.

I bought the cylinders already sleeved and the pistons were included as part of the package along with a head. There were no boxes with the pistons and the rings were already on them. I hope they are right too. I am not sure what will happen if they aren't right. I hope I don't find out. I will recheck the timing when I can.

Thanks
