engine dissasembly troubles

Post by srxvmax50 »

Bless the gentleman who once stated: "there are no stupid questions" So my "intelligent" question is how to go about splitting the cases on an '84 535. Here's the point I am stuck at: I pulled the cyls., the recoil, then three jawed off the "flywheel", It jumped off with a "BANG" , Pulled the mag then spun out all the bolts which hold its aluminum housing onto the rt side of the engine. Couldn't get this housing to separate from the crankcase so I thought I might drop away the bottom half of the crankcase from the rest of the stuff. It won't give, stuck down on the left hand end. I removed the oil pump, took the impeller cover off the coolant pump, removed the capscrew away from the impeller to see if the impeller shaft was the culprit. Wasn't sure. So I kant tell where I am going missing. My pride is already bruised, so "there are no wiseass answers" either, right guys? Thanks alot for your advice, and I'll owe you a beer(s). MJD

Check for a bolt behind the gasket.
Just scrape the gasket away.

You need to pull it off with a 2 slot flywheel puller pushing on the end of the crank and 2 long bolts threaded into the 2 threaded holes that are next to the stator mounting bolt holes. The blind bolts "thepipe" is refering to are on the backside of the case and hold the 2 halves together. They can't be removed until the gearcase is off the crankcase.

The gearcase is doweled to the crankcase and you are also pulling the end crank bearing that resides in the gearcase off the crank at the same time so it won't just come off. It needs to be pulled with a proper puller. There is also a special tool to install it as the bearing needs to be pushed back on from the end of the crank. They can be a pain in the @$$.

Good Luck, opsled

I just took mine off the engine .I took the gearcase apart and its in need of all new bearings and seals, mine has around 7000 miles on it and was run out of oil at some point. AArgh Now this is a overly complex way of pumping fluids and definitely a weak link in my opinion, especially when your seals let go, Thank Heavens for Machinist friends.
