CDI troubles I think??????
i changed the stator and the coil the sled starts on 1/2 a pull and idles perfect its very responsive for about the first 1/2 of the throttle then it kinda bogs if pushed harder than 1/2. I,m thinking CDI at this point because everything else has been either changed or gone through . I dont have a fuel problem as i have rebuilt both pumps, cleaned both carbs, new feul l ines, e clip is in the middle, 1/2 on the pilot air screw, 320 mains. I have new wires ,plugs ,caps and coil also. My clutches are not bogging the engine they actually work really well for being a missmatched set YPZ primary and stock vmax secondary. This sled has 125 psi compression as well. Has anyone had a cdi fail on them, and what happens when they fail do they just stop sparking ,or do they start missing at higher rpm. Any advice would be appreciated. I,ve put alot of time into this sled and am persistent to get it right so i can get out on the trail and smoke my buddies XLT lol.

the original stator did not line up with the mark on the case it was to the left of the mark when we took it off. When i put the new stator on we lined up the timing mark on the case with the tit in the stator because i assumed thats the way it should go back together, line up the marks. I checked with the timing light at idle and the strobe light shows the mark on the flywheel lining up with the mark on the case . Maybe i,m doing something wrong though. I,ve thought of moving the stator to where it was compared to the original stator but its a pain lol I ran out of time yesterday i was gonna get a cdi and try it another 80$ !!! What do you think ????? Timing

the setup i have has worked before very nicely 90 plus mph but i cant get the sled to run like that now and its bugging me because it runs consistently shitty now lol the only thing left is the static timing or a CDI i dont think the carburetor would make this much difference as i have run worse with better results i was gonna try 300 main just because of the condition of the plug its burning not bad and could be slightly leaner.

There are no marks in the case from the factory for stator lineup. There is a timing pointer on the stator plate that needs to line up with 2 corresponding marks on the flywheel depending on which method your using. I always use the dial indicator method for setting static timing and when it's right the stator pointer will be in line with the staight mark on the flywheel at .063 (+ or - .002) BTDC. When using the timing light method the pointer on the stator plate should be within a (U shaped) box mark that is next to the straight line mark with the engine running at 3500rpms. The book calls for using the dial indicator method to set timing and checking it with the timing light method. If it checks to be "out" with the timing light it says to used the dial indicator to set it.
I'm not sure what marks you are looking at but if you didn't use a dial indicator to set your timing or didn't use the right marks that's probably your trouble.

i,M GONNA TAKE YOUR ADVICE AND USE THE DIAL. i,M SURE THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE TIMING BY WHAT U HAVE DESCRIBED. i,LL LET YOU KNOW HOW I MAKE OUT.THANKS AGAIN

I'm not sure if you have the book or not so here's the way it says to do it.
The mag side cylinder is the one to indicate.
1 Find TDC through the spark plug hole and zero your indicator.
2 Rotate the engine counterclockwise (as viewed from the mag end) 2 complete revolutions of the NEEDLE on your indicator.
3 Rotate the engine back towards TDC (clockwise now) until the needle reads .063 BTDC.
4 Rotate the stator plate so that the pointer on it aligns with the straight line on the flywheel and tighten the stator bolts.
5 Rotate the ENGINE 2 complete revolutions (clockwise again) until you come back to .063 BTDC on your needle.
6 Double check your marks to make sure they are aligned, if not repete until they are.
Good Luck, opsled

thanks chuck i emailed him about it. It doesnt hurt to have a spare and they are so damn expensive to buy new. My sled runs but it has clutching issues i,m working on now. Its A Ypz Primary so i gotta experiment with it.

so your timing was off then?
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

The timing was perfect when we checked it with the dial indicator. Someone before me had marked the case so when i put it back together lining up the marks it was correct. I think i have clutching issues because it wont take full throttle, also i need to get my tach working because now i,m just guessing as to when it bogs.

yes any engagement less that 4000 will give you a significant bog, the book says engagementshould be 4200 i think 4500 isnt to schabby
but its a little troublesome in tight trails... this is all with a 102 of course i dunno about the ypz
