exploring carb options

Post by srxvmax50 »

Hi everyone, have you bought yourself another old vmax for christmas yet? Better yet let your loved ones know that an old vmax would make a great christmas gift for 'ole Pa! Kant have too many of them!!
Why I am writing is to quirey the crowd out there about carbs for the 'max. I know the vm38's have been good carbs because of their overlapping circuits and tuneability, and I find no fault with them myself. But what about the Mikuni flatslides? Has anyone tried a set on the vmax? Yamaha must have thought that they were a performance factor when they installed them on the Exciter SX. "Crisper throttle response" were the buzzwords back then, and I guess that SX ran pretty good. Oh by the way you can take them Mikuni butterflys and give them wings by throwing them in the scrap metal barrell. They burned down way too many good 80 SRX's, day one! But not to be controversial, I just wondered if any of you have tried a set of flats? If so where did you start off with fuel circuitry calibration changes from the exciter spec's, if any? Would they even bolt up? Thanks, Joe.

Gotta love your enthuasim Joe ! I had a bought a set of rack mounted Flatslides that were off a 94 Vmax 500 and were modified to fit on a 540. Previous owner swore they worked great with the stock 500 LC. calibrations. Unfortunely I never tried them before I gave them up for a Phazer project sled ! If one was to find a set that were not rack mounted it would be easier otherwise you have to lengthen or make a new throttle shaft and lower carb bracket for them to fit the 540.

There is a mukuni distributor near me that seems to know alot. Maybe call him and ask about comparable jetting specs between your flat slide and round slide.
