vmax vs. srx Ignition

Post by tyler440 »

the following question was presented to me by a user having difficulty logging in

I talked to Olaf Aaen by phone today, asking him to recall if possible carb and clutch settings for the Aaen pipes he used to build for the 535. He said that the vmax ignition sys. was a known difficiency back then. He went to profess this in his catalog but Yamaha got down on him about it, so he had to stop telling the people. Olaf also mentioned that Tim Bender went to using the '81 SRX ignition in his Vmax race sled with problems solved.

what do you guys think about this, i happen to have a 81 cdi i could swap out.... on second thought i dont think the 81 cdi would plug into the vmax harness... must have to swith all the wires or something
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

my engine builder suggest that I toss the vmax cdi and use the ss440 (8k4) cdi as it does not have a rev limiter and has a straight time curve

any thoughts on that?
go fast, turn left..look cool

I have a 81 srx cdi, the wires are all the same colors, but the plug is different.
I have never drove my sled with the srx cdi, but I have started it many times when I have had cdi problems in the past.
I have heard that the srx cdi will advance the timing more than a v-max cdi and allow the engine to rev higher than the stock 8500 rpm.
From the dyno results I have seen, beyond 8500 rpm the HP starts to drop dramatically.
As far as v-max cdi's I have had my share of problems with them.
"tyler440" When you say "known difficiency" what exactly are you or Olaf Aaen referring to?
