engine mods

Post by dave »

Hey guys. Been reading the latest post and the older ones on engine mods and I wanted to clarify a few things. The first is stock pipes are the way to go ? Think it will matter if they are a little beat up ? ( been welded to repair cracks. a few small dings. ) Is the stock oil injection a issue ? If I'm reading these posts right there is or was a kit available to inject the oil into the base of the carbs instead of the lines. I have a 87. The motor has been ported. Is there anything I can look for to see of it was done properly? Any measurements I can make? I realize my best bet would be to send the cylinders to one of the guys mentioned in the previous post, but before I go to that exspence maybe there is something I can check to see if there junk or not. Thanks.

Dave the Article section has Yamaha's porting specifications. The stock pipes are very hard to beat and none beat the stockers across the board..... if you read the dyno tests in the articles you'll see this. If there are no major dents that distort the original shape I'd say run them. I have run many miles on all the 80's vintage Yamaha's and never experienced a oil injection failure. I often wonder how many supposely oil injection failures are simply a lean f/a mixture and the injection gets the blame and then unhooked ? With that said I will say I am a firm believer in the Bender or Reichards direct oil injection kits and installed them on all my 540's and Exciters without any issues. Later Chuck S.
