Comet 102C Clutch applications

Post by Donnie »

Hey everyone. The flurries are flying and the sleds have been started and moved. Now I am trying to figure out a possible clutch swap. We all know that the 83-87 Vmax's had a 102C on them and for some reason Comet decided to replace those with a 108C which in my opinion just didn't work. Here's the question. If I want to put on a 102C, what part number do I need... or will any 30 millimeter bore with 10:1 taper work? I don't want to buy the wrong one. All of this can be avoided if someone has a perfect setup for the 108C though... but I never found it.

Think Snow !!!

Here are two 102s that you can put on ,you will just have to realign the clutchs but that will not be a problem . And you will also have to use the vmax spring and weights. The first part# is 208300A that is the one for 1980 SRX, 80-90 SRV , and 81&82 SRX and others. The second is part # 208306A that is for the 81 SRX . The vmax has an bore depth of -.140 that is where the taper starts, the 208300 has a -.245 & the 208306 has -.200 so you are only talking resetting the clutch offset either .060 for one and .105 for the other . I hope this will help. :D :D Image

More on Comet Clutches

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me how a 212600 fits into the mix? I know that it is an uncalibrated model, but you were getting very specific on bore depth and I ca't find that info anywhere that I have been looking. Thanks

102C COMET CLUTCH

Post by vmax-540 »

Donnie . The spec. that I am talking about is the distance on the crank where th taper starts, The clutches as you know also have a taper in them ,but in some clutches the taper starts either before or after the taper on the crank. I am enclosing a drawing so you can see what I am talking about. I have used and have seen other people use these clutches with out any problem , as you can see you are only talking about a small amount of difference. Just make sure that you reset your clutch offset. :) :) Image

Thanks for the picture. I found on the Dennis Kirk website that the 212600 is considered to be FLUSH as far as bore depth. Does that mean that the 212600 won't work? The 208300 has -.245 as you said. What I can't understand is why is it so hard to find a replacement 102C for the 83-87 Vmax's when all of them had it on it? Did Comet build those specifically for Yamaha? I know that 108 has a wider sheve but I can't see how the 108 is so much different than the 102. I have the same weights, A-3's as I did in my 102 and the original Yamaha spring, but the sled just doesn't engage where I want it to, shift out right, or yield decent gas milage. My brother's '86 Vmax has the 102 on it and it rips. My original 102 blew up and I had to put a 108 on it. Hasn't been right since. I really need to get a new 102 on there. So if you can, please address my questions above. Thanks

102c comets

Donnie the 212600 will work you will just have to readjust your clutch offset . The reason that the 108 doesn't engage as high as the 102 did is because the installed hight of the spring is not the same as the 102 . Comet says that the installed hight for there springs is 2 3/8 inch's with a full shift out of 1 1/8 inch's, that is what the 102s are , but the 108s are 2 1/2 inch's installed hight and 1 1/4 full shift , so when you install the same spring in the 108 you are not compressing it the same as with a 102. I found this out years ago when comet came out with the 108s , I bought one for my sled and it didn't perform Worth a darn, I noticed that when I changed spring that the tension was not the same , so I measured the installed height of both clutches with some micrometers and that was what I found . you can put some spring spacers in your 108 to change the installed hight of the spring and it should make it work like a 102 or try using a polaris dark blue spring , it has been superseded to a dark blue and white so either one is the same the polaris # is 7041781 that has a tension of 120lb 300lb I have used it in a lot of 108s on vmaxs and it works pretty good , you may have to fine tune it from there to get your shift rpms right . I have had better luck with the polaris spring charts in the 108s . And yes comet did make the 102 clutchs for Yamaha to there specs. but comet had also sold them , the part # was 212215A I hope this helps. :) :) Image

Damn good info, I keep second guessing myself about rebuilding my 102 instead of picking up a new 108.

Remember also, Spring presures change with age and heat cycles, your 5-10 year old spring may not be what it used to be, You can check pressures with a drill press and digital scale using a ruler for heights.

I don't have a VM manual, I do however have one for my SRV. Here's my question The SRV manual gives a spec for the clutch offset. That sled came with a Yami primary clutch. I don't know which years of VM's came with a Comet clutch ( or Yami version of the Comet). Does anyone have both the C-C and the offset measurements with a Comet? In the SRV manual, the spec's are given in an illustration
