V-MAX air intake

Hey guys I was reading up on the 86' vmax tunning info and was going to take my
air intake box off the sled. It says to take the baffle out. I was gonna do that and drill
holes into the intake to get it fresh air, It just guzzles gas to no end. What do you guys recommend I do?? Remember I just want a semi-reliable sled that I can go fast on im not oval racing or anything. Also the guys who had it before me put polaris clutches on it they seem to work and the guys went to great lengths to get them on there as the secondary has a whole new shaft to the drive on it. :x I was all ready to put nice light
yami clutches on it and the shaft is totally different so Im gonna have to take the drive shaft off the 81 srx and put it on.

I would leave the polaris primary and put an arctic cat roller secondary on,it wll fit right on that shaft,I did this once on a 570 exciter and it really woke the sled up.

I read an article from Starting Line Products or Thunder Products recently. I don't recall where exactly where I read it.

The article said the restrictive air boxes are there to make the carb tuning less critical.
If you remove the baffles, the jetting requirement becomes more critical.
The restrictive air intake makes the snowmobile run over a wider range of a) Humidity, b) Temperature, and c) Elevation.
By removing the baffles you may find that you need to rejet more often to compensate for smaller changes in the ambient conditions.
Removing the baffles may also may cause you to burn down the engine if the fuel requirement goes up, but you don't raise the jet size when you should have.

I am keeping my stock air box because 1) I don't want to be rejetting every time the conditions change, and 2) I don't want to burn down an engine because I was unaware or too lazy to rejet when the conditions required a jet change.

I want a sled that requires less tuning. Removing or altering the air box sounds like a recipe for needing lots of small tweaks during the season, rather than a machine that you just get on and ride. Racers can remove the air box because they seem to be constantly tweaking jetting for conditions. This intake change may be the reason why they need to be constantly tweaking their jetting.

thanks

Wow, makes alot of sense glad i didnt do all of that to the intake box, like i said i dont
need a oval racer i just want something that is gonna surprise my buddies with their
fancy 10,000 dollar machines and I have one I got for $400 that is just as fast and way easier to work on.

How do I pull a polaris primary clutch apart?? It looks like I need some kind of tool to
pull it apart theres a piece on it that has threads that holds the spider on but its not a bolt.

i also read somewhere that messing with the air box actualy slows the flow rate because of reduced velocity... i wish i had the slightest idea where i saw that

Even though my sled has stock cylinder porting I did the Yamaha recommened porting update to the airbox baffle, which still restricts but, allows for better airflow. As I have explained many times enlarging the stock hole to their specs. is a good blend of better airflow without exessive intake noise or being overly sensitive to jetting. Maybe someday someone will make a cold air kit which allows the airbox to draw from the vent behind the windshield ?

Chris, I moved this topic from the Classifieds to here in the Garage Forum. Thank you Chuck S.

Chris, it is called a jam nut and you will need a jam nut tool and a holding fixture and a spider wrench to get it all apart.

I have a 102 comet clutch for an srx behind the face of the clutch theres a yamaha stamp and 8R 600 stamped on the back, and the weights are labeled SRX1 that gave it away. Im sick of the polaris clutch can i just put the 102 comet on it with the polaris primary?? The conditions here in Windsor, Ontario , Canada are perfect i need to go riding!! Theres like a foot of hard pack its just perfect for this machine and the motor is running so well but the clutch is hanging up. I was wondering if it would work with the 102 comet primary with just a polaris secondary??
