Tony, I have owned 4-5 1983 Vmax 540's and all had the hard plastic kill button unlike the 81 SRX's and older Yamaha's ?

Tony ,Chuck is right I have owned an 83 sence new and it had the one like all other Vmax's the only differance is the ones on the 85's up had the switch in the throttle block for the TORS system.

Tony here is an 1983 sales brochure that shows the new stile kill switch, I have never seen an orange kill switch like the one on the 81 SRX on a vmax unless it was put on by someone , my parts catalog shows that it is the same as an 84 with a part # of 8x626311-00-00. And I also remember braking mine back in 84 and the new one that the dealer ordered was just like the one that broke and it was the new stile.

hmm just when i thought we had covered all of the differences... the sales brocures i have scanned under the "models" section do show the rubber switch... i had always thought they were the hard kind... maybe the brocures are of a preproduction sled, or maybe the 83's did have the rubber switch i dont know

The local yamaha shop had a replacement cover for the kill switch that was Red! The 84 Vmax was Black

I guess this was a change over year or something, I have seen pictures of all sorts of differences on this sled even from Yamaha , there is a picture on the Yamaha web site that even shows the 83 Vmax with the rear suspension that was used on th 81 & 82 SRX but we all know that it came with the Pro Action Link that year , I have no answer to this question all I know for shore was that mine came with the black button like the ones on the 84 and up Vmax's had , and I broke mine and the dealer replaced it with the very same thing and that I have never seen the orange older stile like the one on the SRX on any Vmax. Very confusing!! Tony I just found this in an November 1982 issue of Sno Goer magazine that showes the newer style switch, if this piture isn't clear or you have any question email me and I will send you a copy .

Well Tony you maybe right about the mid year change anything is possable , my vin # is 8U9000288 so anything is possable , and thanks for the info about the port specs, Ill give them a try..

mine is #198 and it has the hard style . but were did you get the the red one tony cause im gonna need one for my 81. mines rotten need a new oem 1 but i know my my dealer would probably blow me off . like their not available any more.

I just ordered one last summer from my dealer and they are still available ,the Part # is 8E3-83956-01-00, and they charged me $4.78 I am going to order a couple more my self.
