A "Crime" I assume

I'm probably a real enemy here,, my self imposed crime is "dismantling a pretty good 83 540V-Max" with 1258mi to use the engine and drive for a mini buggy. To my defence, I admit I was ignorant, I didn't really know I had a "legendary" sled.

My main concern (after reading many posts here) is that a bad seal between the engine case and water pump drive section can put me out of the game,, is that true?

I'm covering my eyes cause I'm really scared to read what I think I'm going to read,,,,

Round up the Posey boys looks like we have a hanging to do..........

No sweat, every one thats is parted keeps others running and makes ours more valuable ! Your pump seal may last a lifetime but, you never know ! I really need to take one of the 83 waterpumps apart and take a seal to a bearing/seal outlet and see if I can get them cross referenced or matched. Has any one tried and can it be doneto retofit these to the newer style shaft and seals ?

,, just to verify, it's actually the seal that keeps the coolant out of the speedo and pump drive case then, not the "crankcase"?

I've looked at the little dip stick several times and didn't see anything but oil,, didn't ride
the thing much once I got it going due to it being summer time and I ran out good grass
fairly fast. Then I tore the poor thing all apart

dastardly act it was.

posted,, neat site you have here,, I have rode most of the 78 to, well ,when the first
Phazer was made of Yamaha's. They weren't mine but some guys that I worked with and that 78 or 79 SRX L/C was a REAL eye opener! Unbelievable high end power.

Hi weasel, I see you found the site. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the gearcase (10mm wrench). Pull it out and if there is no signs of water or anti freeze in it you should be good. It is a good idea to drain, flush and replace the gear case oil on occasion. The book calls for replacement every 500 miles or once a season. I use Amsoil gear oil in mine but he book calls for 1.18 to 1.35 oz of SAE #75 or #80 gear oil. It is something to keep a close eye on along with the water pump seal and bearing. If you want a copy of the Yamaha service manual for this engine I can get mine copied for you. It is a G-H (83-84) manual and should have all the info you need. The place that does them for me comb binds them with laminated covers for about $30.

Hi Phil, I will be needing that manual once I get close to re-rigging the engine,, at this point I still have plenty of "buggy" to build,, probably wont be done till the end of summer.
I do have an "Owners Manual" for my "G" model, I just found it in my so-called "file pile"
that I haven't seen for 3 years.
If you want to make-up a "service manual" in your spare time I'll pay you $30 for it.
