dipstick in the crankcase

ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DIPSTICK IS FOR AND WHAT KINDA OIL IF ANY GOES IN IT AND WHAT IT LUBRICATES. i FOUND MINE LAYING IN THE BELLY PAN WHEN I PULLED MY ENGINE LOL

Lubricates the gears in the housing that drive the water pump.
We have always used Yamaha 2R injection oil.

thanks for the information i had no idea there was lubrication in there until i saw the dipstick laying on the belly pan. my engine was frozen solid one day and there ended up getting water in there that frose. Nothing broke from freezing but it did concern me as to what kinda lube to use thanks again for the reply much appreciated
