Air leaks

Post by Max83 »

I got my Vmax running, but it is a pain to start and only idles on the mag cylinder. It is hard to bring off idle but once it revs up it will idle with the choke on. I sprayed WD around the crankseal and cylinders and couldn't find a leak. The engine has 120 ilbs. of compression and great spark.
Does anyone have any ideas of why this sled won't run right? It has over 6000 miles. Any known seal problems or other tips you guys have to get her running right?
By the way, the carbs are clean and the fuel pumps are filling the carbs.
Thanks, Kevin

Kevin you could switch the carbs. from side to side to see if the problem switches cylinders. It sounds like you had some pretty nasty dirty carbs and there are tiny, tiny passage ways which affect mostly ilde issues. If you look in the body of a carb from the side which bolts to the cylinder, on the bottom is a tiny passage that goes to the pilot jet and this can get blocked. Trust me I've been there..... and have taken carbs off 3-4 times to get them right...... take a set of pipe cleaners or a single strand of stranded wire and work at all the passages with compressed air and carb cleaner.

I will switch carbs, but I am pretty sure the pilots are clean. I made sure the pilot jets and passages up to the venturi were clear.
