Tylers 81 SRX has no serial number. I believe if the engine is replaced with one from Yamaha there will not be a serial # ?

The serial #'s were stamped into the gearcase. The 81 440's and some of the 540's were prone to problems with the waterpump and alot of gearcases were replaced because of damage to them. The replacement gearcases didn't have any #'s stamped into them so if you have one without factory stamped #'s it was probably changed at some point due to damage. I have 1 or 2 around here without #'s.

The 81's had a ignition recall ,where the stator and CDI were replaced with a new stile ignition , very similar to the Vmax ignition but the stator would not fit into the original case so they had to replace the case also , and that is where the serial # was located, most dealers never restamped them in.
