Taming The beast

Post by SRX 540 »

Hello ,
I have a wiley sled that I need tips and advice to sort out.My Chassis is an 8M6,81 SRX440 .My Engine is an 8U9, 83 540. It has Aaen pipes and A Magnum gold primary. The Autolube system is disabled, the pump is still there but the cable and tank are removed. The carbs I have were hooked up to the chassis when I got it.so they are probably the 440 carbsThe aibrox is also misssing(NOOOOO) It all fits together and kinda runs, but badly. It almost completely refuses to start

I'm also not sure which nozzzle to hook the fuel pump up to for it's vaccuum.there are the two near the crank bearings, which i suspect are for oil supply. and there is a small one near the stamped number by the recoil.Where was it from factory.

The compression is 125 in each cylender.I know these engines are picky so I want to get the carburation sorted out and jetted properly.I have had no luck sourcing an airbox.Everything seems ok so I am suspecting the carbs as my trouble, since they are from the 440(32 or 34 mm,can't remember) and weren't originally set up for premix,

I am the only person around here with one of these that is even close to running, there are 2 in the salvage yard, but neither have engines and are mostly dismantled.so I have nothing to compare with.
What are your ideas for me?

The fittings near the crank bearings are the ones for the fuel pumps the SRX had only one pump and the Vmax had two. Use the one on the left as that is the one the SRX used and it is easier to get at and cap off the one near the water pump, I would reinstall the oil injection because these things are bullet proof, all you have to do is keep them adjusted properly and keep them clean. The SRX used the fittings on the intake just in front of the carbs ,that little fitting is on the 540 as well ,the Vmax used fittings that went into the fuel lines just before the fuel pumps ,you need to use the ones on the intake as it responds faster to rpm and throttle changes . I have both my 81 SRX & 83 Vmax that way and have never had any problems .The SRX had 38 MM butterfly carbs ,and the Vmax had 38MM round slide carbs you need to use the round slides as they are a lot better carb, and are calibrated for the 540 ,so if you have the SRX's you need to get some Vmax ones and save yourself a lot of headaches. Also the best pipes for the 540 are the originals, the Aaen ones lose H.P..I would also get a Comet 102c because it is a lot better clutch ,get the one for the SRX as they still make the one, the part # is 208306A. The fitting near the rewind is a vent for the gear case. :D :D

The carbs that were on the SRX chassis were round slides, but they aren't 38s.guess the previous owner clued in.I'll try to come up with the oil injection parts but Finding parts around here is difficult to say the least.Should I get another fuel pump and tee it into the supply line since 540s had two to begin with?

The Vmax have a special fuel filter in the tank and a rubber cap for the tank that aloud the use of two fuel lines all the way from the tank to the pumps . The best thing is to find a Vmax parts sled and get all the pieces you need. Post an ad the this site ,some one should have what you need. It will work fine with just one pump, the biggest thing you need is the right carbs. I would just try and get the carbs and oil injection and go from there. :D

Well two years later I managed to hunt down some new VM 38s and a Fuel Pump.I'll fool around with these and see what happens.

Anyone have any luck retrofitting some other skis? Maybe there is a lighter ski or a cheaper one to replace.

If you plan on trail riding one of the best to do is, adding plastic skis such as USI's. Lighter weight, improved handing and a better ride !

mine aren't in decent shape at all, they are bent and twisted.Thats why I want to replace them. Some Farmers had my sled before, hence the beaten body panels, bent skis and no 440 engine after 1900 miles...
