Nice to see you all again.

My '83 got a new clutch spring yesterday. I went with the silver spring that originally comes with the 108-C for the Vmax. After getting some advice here in the forum, I added the two 1/8 inch spacer shims to increase the preload and tension throughout the rpm range. The engagement still seems low to me at 3500. Shift out is about 5500, too low. I have to run half throttle to hold 25 mph at 6000 rpm. I get terrible gas mileage that way too. My question there is... does the Yamaha Clutch spring color code match the Comet spring color code?

And now part two... my airbox, which is held on by more than one screw... is getting filled with oil kicking back from the carbs. I am looking for ideas on that one. The carbs are stock for '83 running #330 mains.

I want this thing to run like it did a few years ago before my Comet 102-C scattered. I could fly over farm fields at 110 easy. Today, I only got to 85 and the tach wouldn't get above 7500. I know there's more in it.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone on this one too.

i think you should be running the polaris blue spring. the oil/gas spitback is due to the engine running too slow, due to the wrong spring....

I'm hearing from Jeff (V-max540) good things about the Polaris Black Green primary spring ,with stock A-3s and this put's the engagement at 4200 Rpm's which most will agree is the minimum for the 540 to pull. I gave up on the Silver spring....way wrong !
