Hay Tony When you pull the motor out to fix the water pump seal, do yourself a favor and replace the whole pump with one of the 84- up ones, they last a lot longer then the 83's.
Clutch that thing for 8400 RPM's and hold on, you will notice better performance in all snow conditions. When I had mine ported back in the 80's I think that I used a Comet Red Yellow or a Aaen Orange primary spring so I didn't have to cut the spider. It would engage at about 4500 and shift out at 8400. I know you are a better clutch guy then me but I just thought I would just let you know what I ran when I had mine ported.
I hope to have mine finished this summer as well I just want to send the cylinders out to have them re nickelsiled, they have been update ported and the head is finished other then having it sent to Swain Tech to have it coated. The pistons have the domes barrier coated by Swain-Tech and the skirts have been lube coated by Swain-tech as well. Talk to you soon..
