CDI Options SRX/Vmax

Post by Vmax540 »

I ran into an older guy at a grass drag a month ago, who was into SRX's and Vmax540's back in the day and he said get the Original 81 SRX or 1980(?) SS440 CDI which has a straight timing curve(?) and is very reliable he said this will end your CDI failure problems. He said you need to run a jumper to ground with this setup and could not remember exactly how ? Anyone seen this done ?

Trying to make a chart so, any help/corrections/additions would be great. http://vintagesleds.com/bs/index.php/topic,61054.0.html

Looking for a dead CDI from 1980 SRX. Need to do some destructive hi-voltage comparison, so no point in destroying a good one. It's a Hitachi small grayish-black plastic box T1A01-32 / 8K2-10 909 is the typical numbers. Let me know what you have . Will work out something on a future CDI if anyone can help....Thanks Scott

The 87 & up CDI and stator is the best you can get for the 540 Vmax, as a rule any of these CDI's are as good as any thing as far as reliability goes, I have been playing with these sense 83 and have seen very few of them go bad. If I were you I would stick with the correct one and save your self a lot of head acks. Just my opinion..

thats great jeff but how many 87 and up cdi's do you have for sale? they dont exactly grown on trees and neither do the other years of vmax540. basically the idea is that maybe there is more than 1 way to skin a cat
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

I wasn't trying to step on anyones toes here, all I was saying is that the original CDI is as good as any thing else and they are easy to find ,they are on Ebay all the time and a lot of selvage yards have them. What people chose to do is there business, all I was trying to do is help someone out.

Good question, I have never heard of a limiter but then, I'm not sure. I will ask around.

i AGREE WITH JEFF.WHY CHANGE OUT YOUR CDI ON EITHER SLED. BESIDES YAMAHA ALREADY DID IT, FINDING A 81 SRX WITH THE 8K4 ING IS LIKE FINDING ONE WITHOUT A COMET. GOOD LUCK. THE 81 SRX HAD TO MUCH TIMING FOR EVERYDAY TRAIL USE, THAT'S WHY THEY WERE UPDATED. STRAIT CURVE WORKED GREAT FOR RACING, DEALERS WERE CHANGING THESE OUT BEFORE SOME 81,s WERE EVEN SOLD. I BET TIM BENDER USED A STRAIT CURVE, BUT JOE BLOW DID NOT. 3:16 (yammie tony)

That is the original 81 stator, the updated one had a pickup coil on it like the Vmax does..

Your welcome, and yes I have Tony's old 81, it is the one he used to race. I bought it from Mark the same person you bought yours from. If you check out YouTube under 1981 srx yamaha it shows Mark racing mine against a Newer Cat & Ski Doo, he finished second to the Ski Doo. This is a complement to Yamaha for it's dedication and understanding of performance when a twenty year old sled can compete with newer sleds, it just shows how fast and even maybe ahead of their time these sleds really were.

JEFF HAS THE ONE I HAD. THAN I SOLD IT WITH A PARTS 81. THE ONE JEFF HAS WAS VERY FAST. I REMEMBER I RAN 102 IN 1000 F.T. WITH THAT SLED ON ICE BACK IN 1990. I BET IT WAS EASY BELOW ZERO THAT MOURNING. THAT VIDEO SHOWS JEFF,S 81 WHICH WAS STILL SET-UP BY ME. HARD TO REMEMBER BUT I WORKED WITH BRUCE FROM PSI ON MY CYLS. I FOUND THROUGH MY DEALER AT THE TIME THAT SLED WAS SOLD NEW IN ALBANY NY AREA. THE ONE KEN JUST BOUGHT IS MINT. AND ALWAYS WAS. I WORKED AT GENERAL MOTORS WITH THE GUY THAT BOUGHT THAT FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THAT SLED WAS SOLD NEW FROM STONES SNO-SLED IN NEWARK NY. GREAT SLEDS FOR YOU GUYS. 3:16 (yammie tony)
