Track change on my 81 SRX

Bought a 1" track for my 81 SRX and last night my son and I started pulling the sled apart. Got the skid out, chaincase off, and both nuts removed from the front axle. Still can't get the front axle out. I found a diagram and it shows collars with setscrews. How hard is it to remove these? Do I only have to loosen one enough to move a drive wheel and remove the axle? Any tips are appreciated.

Loosen off the left set screw slide collar in; then with collar slide over pull the drive shaft over to the left and pull the shaft out. Super easy, i thought i was going to have a time but easier then putting the skid on.

My gosh, I can't believe how easy that was. Thankfully my setscrews were not rusted. The first one loosened up nicely and I pulled the axle out. Put in the new track and before I re-installed the axle, I made sure I could remove all of the setscrews. Got most of the sled buttoned up, chaincase, exhaust etc. Tomorrow night we put the skid in. I repacked all the bearings and replaced one as it was missing a seal, it looked like it might have been original.
Can't wait to see how it performs now with a 1" track verses the stock one. This track came from a late 90's SRX. Kinda cool that its going into an 81.
It looked to me like there was room under there (at least in front, not sure about the top of the track) for a 1.25" track.
My 12 year old son is sure curious as to what it will do to the handling of the sled. This is his favourite sled, he LOVES IT. He has never hit full throttle, he is very cautious. Although one time he was bragging that he was following me on the lake one time, and he was going 110km/h!! He said it did it quite easily, and that was in 10 inches of powder!
This forum is great, better than the manual I have. Thanks again guys.
Ryan.

Ya told ya very easy, doesnt the manual give you the procedure that i posted? I thought it did but maybe i was looking at my v-max manual... Not enough room for a 1.25 a one inch is really pushing it...Post some videos ill try and make one today..

I've got the manual on Microfiche. At the time I got the sled, that was the only manual I could find. Its good for torque values and tuning/tweaking, but its really lacking procedures.

Yep, it still has a 440 in it, its numbers matching to the chassis to boot!

Buried in these pics from a sled trip my son and I took a couple of weeks ago are some pics of the SRX. I must say, that new track made a HUGE difference in how the sled handles. I highly recommend upgrading to a one inch track. Now it rarely gets stuck, and if it does, its much easier to get out.
OOPS: Here is the link.

I got the SRX for free in Dec of 2009. It sat abandoned in a friends garage for at least 10 years. She offered me a free sled, and could only describe it as black, and it was a Yamaha. I figured it was probably some junker and would just end up parting it out. I was very happy to see what was there and its now the most reliable sled in my fleet. I had to clean the carbs, change a couple of motor mounts, and recovered the seat. Starts on the first pull, two or three if its very cold out or has been sitting a long time. What a rush when that engine hits 6 grand.
This sled trip we went on recently was a good test of that sled. We had to climb some steep hills that with the old track would have required a lot of speed, and finesse. My son had no problem climbing up the old ski hill. Funny though, he got stuck on the way down the hill.

He was being cautious with all the trees around.
Just tonight we took out the SRX and my 96 SLE Touring 500 and it does circles around the SLE. We had a few "races" on a lake that had fresh snow, about 6 inches and the wind made it smooth as glass. I had the SRX up to 100km/h and the SLE would only go 80 on the same surface.
Only repair left to do on the SRX is change the water pump seal, I can see some antifreeze in the oil gear box thing.
