removing primary. Help ME!!!!

Post by sledheadkevin »

ok so when i bought my 83 vmax i found that the primary was not complete. i am unable to get the thing to pop loose to take it off. does anyone know a secret remedy for pulling off the clutch? maybe my puller is wrong. i do have a problem that the beginning threads for the puller are stripped so i have to try and get it in far enough to catch the good threads. what can i do to get this thing off? i really want to get a new one on there so that i can get this thing going. PLEAsE HELP

Tilt the sled to the right, pour a little oil or greese in the shaft (Hydraulic force) and retry your 16x1.5mm puller. Tighten the puller a little tap puller with hammer then repeat.....

First you absolutly have to know what clutch you have. Many people over the years simply get a different Comet and put the VM recomended springs and arms in it. The problem with comets is there are several different pullers used depending on which Comet it is. I went to a 'Good" hardware store bought an assortment of large bolts, both metric and SAE, corase and fine, so I can match up the threads, If your threads are forked, that might be hard.
What Chuck said may work, I've also tipped the sled on both sides letting a good Pen. oil like KROIL soak in over night, and on some I have had to use heat, which I really don't like to do. It can be ugly

Is there somewhere on the clutch that i can look to find out what clutch it is? i hope not on the outside plate as that is the piece missing from my clutch and im affraid that is where all the identifying numbers are.

Hate to say it but I think that is where the numbers were. Not sure if it would help anyway.
Besides selling them under their own brand, Comet also private labeled for Arctic Cat, John Deer, Yammi and quite a few others so often part numbers are hard to deciphier. Also Comet is now out of business altho its my understanding that Certified Parts from Janesville has purchased their name and inventory. Not sure how hard it would be to chase down numbers
