I really got what I paid for. A $350 V-Max was too good to be true. After removing my flywheel and stator, I noticed brown water coming from the seal behind the stator. I know there is a gasket behind there. What is that gasket sealing and where can I get one? Can I replace it without removing the engine? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated...having bad luck with my first V-Max
Thanks
Andrew

It sounds like it is the water pump seal, you are going to have to pull the engine to replace it , but the problem is Yamaha no longer makes that seal, so the best thing to do is to get a complete water pump assembly from an 84 or up Vmax because in 84 they changed the design because they did have a problem . You can get all the seals and gaskets for the 84s and up from Yamaha ,you should change all the seals and gaskets in there just to play it safe ,they aren't that expensive. The newer ones don"t seam to have as much problem as the 83s,that was one of the 83s few problems.

My V-max never made it out of the garage for the trip. It stopped running while idling and it wouldn't turn over. I removed the gear housing and the bearing is rusted and shot, I think the impeller is f'd up too cuz that barely spins. Oh well. I'll have it goin again in a couple days.
I've got the motor ripped down and removed the crankshaft to clean everything up and reseal.
I asssume the gear on the crankshaft is pressed on?
