Polishing the rod was done to help prevent stress risers in the material. How important this is, is relavent to how close to the limit of the strength of your rod your at. Most sleds have pretty strong rods. Its more of an issue when dealing with very heavy pistons.
It is also common in 4 cy race engines to help shed oil and get it back down in the sump

The Vmax had polished rods from the factory, what Bob said is true ,it was done to help prevent stress cracks from forming.
