Little Tab On bottom of speedometer/tach

was wondering what the little tab on the bottom corner of the speedometer housing was, Mine broke off while removing it from the handlebars, it didnt seem like it did anything and it didnt take much to break it, the only thing i could think of it being for was to tell whether or not it had the factor speedo, any ideas?
