The fuel shut-off's from the factory on the V-Max were on the left hand side on the dashpanel. My 87 still has the stock ones and they work. I took the assembly off my 86 as it was frozen and just installed in-line shut-off-s. In both cases my shut-off's are located after the fuel pump. It's always a good safety feature to avoid your engine flooding due to a gasket/diaphtam leak in the carbs. I use them when trailering or when the machine sits. It's also a nice feature when you want to run the gas out of the lines and the carbs when storing for the winter. This is just my opinion.

Hope this helps.

different years had different syles.... i believe it was the 83 and 84... maybe 85 that had the syle like above... the 86 had the remote cable kind... which dont seem as nice but whatever floats your boat... my 84 has two shut offs (2 pumps) and i can manage to turn them on while riding.... ya know like how i take off and realize once it starts sputtering that i forgot to turn the gas on.... quick lift the hood and turn them on... and never stop moving... been there done that...
My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

Hey Johnny,
My two fuel shut offs are like agfirecat stated. After the pumps and they are a very good idea for several reasons as mentionned above. I didn't know the 81 didn't have this feature. Later, Marc
