81 SRX Engine Rebuild

Hi guys,

Finally got my project 81 SRX completely torn down to bare frame to get a few spots touched up where there a few cracks. Now I'm at the engine, I have the top end off and here's where I'm stuck. All the engine stuff I've done before was just rebuilding the top end, however, this engine is rather disgusting from what I can see in the bottom end and I figured it would be worth it at this point to put new seals and bearings in for the crank.

My Question, what special tools if any are needed to get the bottom end apart and also if anyone has any crazy ideas that make this job much easier and quicker. Any ideas, suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and THINK SNOW!!!

Mike, Make sure you have a good service manual O.E.M. prefered. You'll need a puller to remove the water pump housing in order to split the C.C.

Is this puller the same as the flywheel puller? Or is this another completely different puller all together?

no you got the right idea... its been while since ive had the pleasure of rebuilding one but here goes..... pull the flywheel using the bolt holes from the starter cup (or maybe there is two others i cant remember) be sure not to thread the bolts on deeper than the threads are... if you do and the flywheel turns the bolts will tear throught the coils... been there done that... then after the flywheel is off... take a center punch and make some marks between the stator plat and the housing... i usually make 2 or three.... this will help emesly when you put it back together... there are other marks but you want to be absolutly sure it is in time or else you will play hell trying to adjust it..... then after that there should be two threaded holes to pull the water pump/ stator housing off of ther crankcase.... oh! there are 4 bolts you have to take out before that obvisously... your going to need some really long metric bolts to pull the housing... i recommend looking at the kids' bike steering stems.. hahaha theres usually some good ones there!.... also i think youll find that replacing crank bearings is incredibly expensive.... if your like me you end up looking on ebay... i think i bought mine for $60 or $80.... took a couple of weeks for one to appear one there tho.....
