Re: need help with identification please
Well I tried to start the beast last night and created a problem. When I picked the sled up I loaded it in the back of my truck with the ass end up on the tailgate. I remembered to shut the fuel lines off under the hood to prevent gas leaking into the motor however last night I noticed the fuel shut off valves have been bypassed. Of course I didnt notice this until I tried to start the damn thing for half an hour including choking and pumping the primer.
I have great spark but just cant get it to fire. My guess is the crankcase is flooded.
I have two questions:
1) how do I "unflood" the motor
2) why wont a 2 stroke run even if the crankcase is full- seems to me it should still fire and possibly go off like a bomb

Re: need help with identification please
if its full your best bet is to take the carbs off (clean them) take the plugs out (dry them) and take the pipes off (dump the gas out of them)
then pull the rope until the gas mist stops coming out everywhere. put it back together and bam it should fire up

My airbox is held on by one screw, not because Im lazy but because it is less weight!

Re: need help with identification please
Like tyler said pulling carbs and pipes off pop the plugs out and pull on it till no more mist comes out if u do not do this and just keep pulling u could have problems. I just replaced a pipe and muffler on a sxr700r as the owner flooded it kept pulling and pulling finally it was trying to hit when it did start it backfired and split the pipe and grenaded the muffler! Ive watched the guys at the drags use compressed air to unflood a motor in a hury but never done it myself
On my 85 vmax the fuel shut off is broke always on ive never had a flooding issue with it yet in 3 yrs even in the back of a truck with the track on the tailgate is it possible u flooded it by pumping the primer to many times? once u get it un flooded try to start it with just the choke no primer

Re: need help with identification please
Thanks guys. It's definatly possible I flooded it or at least added to the flooding with the primer- I pumped it quite a few times trying to start it and then a couple more trying to find what fuel lines went to the primer. The primer lines go directly to nipples installed in each intake manifold- I disconnected the line and pumped the primer and it sprayed about 4 foot so it definately pumps the gas.
Re: need help with identification please
lol yea three pumps max is what i go by i removed the primer on my max as it wasnt needed always starts right up with the choke with in three pulls what color spark u got bright blue? have u tried fresh plugs yet? ive seen plugs spark bright out of a hole but not fire under compresion new out of the box
Re: need help with identification please

Please expain why- probably obvious but I'm missing it. I had the key on when pulling with plugs attached to the coil wires to check for spark.Vmax540 wrote:Shut the ignition key off when pulling with the plugs out !
Re: need help with identification please
The way I understand....... is with out a good ground the resistance (R) goes high which makes for more current or amperage (I) and is hard on the stator and CDI. We all check for spark with the plugs out but, we should use a spark tester http://www.jrgraham.com/browse.do?actio ... id=7108930VMAXMARK wrote:Please expain why- probably obvious but I'm missing it.
