An 83 with the updated Red dot oil pump and jetting is all good. The only big performance wise change came with the 87 and the upgraded ignition.

Lots of reading in the Articles section or if you do a search. C.D.I.'s sometimes fail and as far as reliability it is All in setup.....

stators seem to burnup more than they should too.. but how much can we really expect from 22+ year old windings?.... either way there isnt a year that has any major issues.. rotating assembly all stayed exactly the same from 83-87 (and longer if you figure in the canadian models)

It really doesn't matter ,they All are very reliable sleds if you just do normal maintenance on them. It's more of a matter of which one you like the best.
