Silencer Vmax is Bogging & Hesitating

Post by 91 Vmax sled »

Hopefully "Vmax540" or someone can get us pictures of the inside of these "Silencer" so we can all see how they come together and if we can clean them out.

I took my silencer off my 87 and put it unto my 90 and it sounded different right away. It seemed to run really good for the most part that I had it out for a quick ride to test. It still hesitated the odd time but no as much as before. It ran up to top speed without bogging or hesitating for most of the time. I still had the odd bog and hesitating at times thou. But seems alot better for sure.

I also notice that one of the rings on the one muffler was broken and a gap of 1'' in the spot where it sits. The gap is usally about 2/16 so maybe this is giving me some problems as well with air lost. I know that piece of the pipe goes into the silencer but maybe it is making that difference.

I also want to dip my "Silencer" into a tank of regular "part cleaning solution" has anyone tried this before and if I let this sit in there under the cleaner for awhile would I get a problem of wrecking somthing inside the silencer? Or would it be ok to do this?

the muffler of the vmax

Post by srxvmax50 »

Coming back again at you guys with compelling thoughts about Yamaha's silencer sys. for the Vmax. The factory silencer serves a dual purpose: decible quieting and essential back pressure.. In my opinion there is room for compromise of decibles in order to shave the eccess weight of the muffler. I am thinking I am going to keep the stock exhaust down to the point of the muffler, then changeout to a lighter silencer system. My objective? reduce weight and maintain horsepower. We should be be able to do this, right? Just forget about the factory muffler and how it is built. Whats important is how that muffler developed the proper backpressure. Then duplicate these pressure readings using a lighter weight exhaust sys. Should work, shouldn't it? I know I don't have solutions yet, but I am thinking. MJD.

Many aftermarket dealers do it everyday but, yet they have access to dyno's ! I wonder what the racers like Bender used back in the day for a silencer certainly, not the heavy stock one ?
